Required Hydrant Flushing Scheduled for April 13-16, 2026
Hanover, Pa. – The Borough of Hanover Department of Water Resources will perform required semi-annual hydrant flushing the week of April 13 - 16, 2026, beginning at 8:00 AM and concluding around 4:00 PM daily. Public hydrants and dead-end lines located west of Baltimore and Carlisle Streets including McSherrystown Borough and Conewago Township will be flushed on Monday and Tuesday, April 13 & 14. Hydrants located east of Baltimore and Carlisle Streets will be flushed on Wednesday and Thursday, April 15 & 16. Private hydrants will be flushed the following week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, April 21, 22 & 23, 2026.
Semi-annual hydrant flushing is required in order to remove sediment and to ensure that hydrants are in proper working order. Without flushing, customers would likely experience discolored water. Ensuring hydrants are operational is essential for fire protection, as a malfunctioning hydrant could pose serious risks in an emergency. Flushing also improves water quality by introducing fresh water, reducing stagnation, removing excess chlorine in low-flow areas, and clearing planktonic microorganisms.
The public should be aware that the strong force of water may dislodge debris on the road, and vehicle owners should move vehicles to avoid incidental damage. Additionally, care should be taken when driving on roads where water is actively flushing. Once flushing is complete, customers may need to run the cold water tap at a low setting for a few minutes until the water is clear.
As always, the decision to perform hydrant flushing is evaluated based on available water resources and any current water restrictions. Borough Water Resources professionals monitor dam water levels daily. As of this public notice, the water level at Sheppard-Myers Dam is at 100%, and the level at Lawrence Baker Dam is at 80.08%, with an overall capacity level of 82.93%. Current dam water levels are listed on the Borough website at www.HanoverBoroughPA.gov/337/Water-Resources.
