UPMC Hosts Empowering Summer Workshop for Local Girls in Partnership with Girls on the Run

HARRISBURG, PA. (July 18, 2025) – UPMC hosted a hands-on summer workshop in partnership with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Midstate at UPMC Community Osteopathic in Harrisburg. The event welcomed approximately forty girls for an afternoon of learning about health care careers.

The workshop featured a demonstration of the DaVinci surgical robot led by Andrea Benton, M.D., minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. Each participant had the opportunity to operate the robot in demo mode, offering a glimpse into the world of advanced surgical technology.

Adding a creative twist to the day, participants took part in a “Name the Robot” contest, where they submitted ideas for naming the DaVinci surgical robot. The winning name, Helpful Hazel, was selected as it describes the robot’s supportive role in surgical care. The team behind the winning entry was recognized for their imagination and teamwork.

In addition, UPMC nurse educators guided the girls through a mini operating room workshop, providing a behind-the-scenes look at surgical preparation and the importance of teamwork in health care settings.

Girls on the Run International, founded in 1996, has empowered more than two million girls across North America. The program helps girls build confidence, resilience and life skills through physical activity and mentorship. According to the organization, 97% of participants report learning critical life skills such as conflict resolution, helping others and making intentional decisions.
