Lifting Up Central Pennsylvania: WellSpan’s Approach to Community Health
High quality health care should be simple, personal and accessible to everyone. That’s the future we’re building together at WellSpan Health.
However, across Central Pennsylvania, many of our friends and neighbors face challenges with life’s most fundamental needs. For families throughout this region, nutritious meals, stable housing and affordable health care are out of reach.
At WellSpan Health, we see these realities every day both within and beyond the walls of our hospitals and doctors’ offices. Our mission calls us to deliver exceptional health outcomes while confronting the barriers standing in the way of good health and well-being. We’re not just preventing and treating illness – we’re pioneering personalized care experiences for the friends and neighbors we serve.
We recently released our 2025 Community Impact Report, that reflects the work happening in our 12 counties to lift up the more than 1 million friends and neighbors who rely on us as a Trusted Partner. Our hope is that it inspires all of us—during this holiday season and well beyond—to seek out partnerships allowing every person in our community to thrive.
In fiscal year 2025, WellSpan invested $365 million in community benefit, approximately 9% of our total operating expense, a figure that exceeds the industry average. This investment funded:
· Patients on Medicaid receive vital medical, behavioral health and substance abuse services.
· Stable housing across the region, with grants worth $3.5 million.
· Free services through our charity care program for those patients who are unable to pay.
· The creation of mobile behavioral health crisis teams, an expansion of our crisis centers, and additional inpatient behavioral health beds to meet the growing needs in the community.
· Food programs and funding across the region so healthy meals were available to millions of our friends and neighbors.
In addition, we have taken our care on the move directly into the communities we serve. Our mobile mammography and crisis units meet people where they live – and offer life-saving cancer screenings and intervention.
Specialized complex care services at WellSpan York Hospital treat the sickest patients across our 12-county region and beyond—including our Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma
Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, the largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit across seven counties and a heart and vascular program recognized internationally.
Looking ahead, we are preparing to open three new hospitals in 2026—in Carlisle, Newberry, and Shrewsbury—bringing care even closer to home for those communities.
WellSpan’s commitment to Central Pennsylvania extends beyond the care we provide. We serve as a powerful economic driver for the region. In 2025, our total economic impact reached $8.7 billion. WellSpan’s operations supported 45,557 jobs directly and indirectly, and generated nearly $1 billion in federal, state and local tax revenue. We paid $224 million to local vendors and contractors, strengthening the economic health of our communities. Our new expansion project at WellSpan York Hospital to broaden our surgical and critical care capabilities has engaged more than 87% local construction and contractors.
These efforts reinforce what guides WellSpan’s board members, executives, physicians, nurses and team members. We believe caring for the people of Central Pennsylvania means investing in both their health and their future. And we know when we put our community first, we can create lasting, meaningful changes.
