From 1979-2011, she was a member of the English Department at Delone Catholic, serving as the department chair for many years. She was influential in creating the school’s Advanced Placement and dual enrollment programs. Among her many committee memberships, she served as the chair of the Middle States committee, maintaining the school’s accreditation, which dates to 1952. She was named educator of the year by various organizations three different times, and served as Hanover’s Poet Laureate from 2005 to 2007. Since her first “retirement” from Delone Catholic, she served on the faculty at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., and was the director of the Institute for Leadership, Ethics, Achievement, and Development, retiring again in 2025. Throughout her years in academia, she is perhaps best known for her mentorship and relationships with her students. She has been a lector at Annunciation B.V.M. Parish in McSherrystown for many years and has been active in the leadership of the Ladies Auxiliary at the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus. In this role, she provides support for Catholic parishes, organizations, and schools throughout the community, including Delone Catholic. She was also a member of the board for the John Gastley Scholarship Foundation, an organization that has raised more than $300,000 since 2006 to fund scholarships to Delone Catholic for students who have been academically successful and demonstrated community involvement.

Dwain M. Smith ’76 – a prominent member of a multi-generation Delone Catholic family who has established himself as a professional and volunteer leader in the Adams-Hanover community. He has been the owner of Smith & Company, CPAs, a respected accounting firm in Hanover for decades, through which he has been a generous sponsor of events and organizations throughout the community. Notably, he has been a sponsor of the Henny Noel Memorial Golf Tournament since its establishment in 1994. His agreement to become the tournament’s presenting sponsor in 2015 led directly to the event nearly tripling its average profit. Just as important as his financial support has been the countless hours he has dedicated to Delone Catholic and numerous other organizations. He spent more than 15 years on the school’s finance committee, and more than a decade as the treasurer of the Athletic Association. He has been involved in all aspects of parish life at St. Joseph Parish in Hanover, including the school’s athletic association and the Boy Scout Troop. Additionally, he has been a member of the Hanover Lions Club since the early 1980s, serving as its president and treasurer for multiple terms. He was also the founding head coach of the cross country program, serving until 2012. He has coached numerous division and district championship teams as well as individual district and state champions, quickly writing a new chapter in the storied history of Delone Catholic athletics. More importantly, he communicated clear expectations, supported his athletes in achieving their best, and created a deep, widely recognized culture that endures long after his runners graduate, many of whom recognize him more for influencing their growth as servant leaders than as athletes.
