Borough of Hanover to Perform Semi-Annual Hydrant Flushing

Hanover, Pa. – The Borough of Hanover Department of Water Resources will perform semi-annual hydrant flushing Monday through Thursday, October 5 - 8, 2026. Public hydrants and dead-end lines located mainly west of Baltimore and Carlisle Streets, including McSherrystown Borough and Conewago Township, will be flushed on Monday and Tuesday, October 5th and 6th. Hydrants located east of Baltimore and Carlisle Streets will be flushed on Wednesday and Thursday, October 7th and 8th. Flushing will begin at 8AM and run to approximately 4PM. Private hydrants will be flushed the following week.

During and following periods of flushing, customers may experience discolored water. If this happens, the cold-water tap should be run for a few minutes until the water runs clear. It is suggested that customers postpone doing laundry during flushing times to avoid potential staining.

The strong force of water may dislodge debris on the road. Vehicles should be moved from flushing areas to avoid incidental damage. Additionally, care should be taken when driving on roads where water is actively flushing.

Semi-annual hydrant flushing is required in order to remove sediment and to ensure that hydrants are in proper working order. Ensuring hydrants are operational is essential for fire protection, as a malfunctioning hydrant could pose serious risks in an emergency. Flushing also improves water quality by introducing fresh water, reducing stagnation, removing excess chlorine in low-flow areas, and clearing planktonic microorganisms.
