Bell Dedication Announced - Hanover Artist Featured in York County Bells Across PA

Hanover, Pa. – As part of America250 | HANOVER, a one-of-a-kind Liberty Bell will be installed across from the historic Hanover Train Station at 220 North Railroad Street, near the rear entrance of the Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. The bell is one of seven which York County commissioned by local artists as part of Bells Across PA, an initiative of America250PA. Each hand-painted bell showcases a unique aspect of York County’s history. Hanover's bell, titled "Building Community," was designed by artist Mary Moores. The artwork features iconic Hanover-area symbols in vibrant primary colors, accented by a bright pretzel-patterned border along the lower rim.

“The Bell project was a real privilege for me!” stated Moores, adding that the bell represents, “the unique aspects of Hanover as a kaleidoscope that is ever-changing.” Describing the design Moores explained that “The top [of the bell], which includes the keystone emblem of Pennsylvania, reinterprets a PA Dutch hex sign to recognize Hanover's heritage and role as a pivotal state in the formation of the United States.”

The design also celebrates Hanover’s rich history and culture. A black rose pays tribute to the Hanover’s royal heritage, while centrally placed ears of corn highlight the region’s strong agriculture roots. One of the bell’s most endearing features is a band of brightly colored handprints, created using the hands of current residents – real people who represent the diverse backgrounds and roles of Hanover’s population. “The overlapping hands of different colors and sizes reinforce the idea that every person's contribution matters; they are meant to encourage audience engagement while providing a connection with others,” explained Moores, adding that, “the pretzels along the rim connect Hanover's manufacturing reputation as the ‘Snack Food Capital of the World.’”  

Borough Manager Margie Lewis, who spearheaded many of the events of America250 | HANOVER’s celebration, expressed her enthusiasm about the bell’s placement in Hanover. “By thoughtfully capturing the many facets of the Hanover community, Moores has created a lasting tribute that honors America's first 250 years while inspiring pride, unity, and a shared vision for the future,” Lewis said.

Moores is expected to attend the dedication ceremony, along with members of the America250 | HANOVER Committee and the York County Board of Commissioners. The public is invited to attend, and no registration is required. For additional information, please contact the Borough of Hanover.

About Mary Moores:

Mary Moores is a Hanover-based pastel artist whose work celebrates the people, places, and history that define a community. Raised in rural Maryland near Camp David and Cunningham Falls, she earned a dual honors degree in art education and wheel-thrown pottery from West Virginia University. Pastels have become her primary artistic medium. A Hanover resident since 1997, Mary has completed numerous public art projects throughout the local area.
