SUMMARY:Hearing Distressing Voices Simulation
DESCRIPTION:The Hearing Distressing Voices Simulation is a 2.5-hour workshop developed by Pat Deegan\, PhD. It was designed to help individuals better understand what it is like to experience distressing voices. The workshop begins with watching a filmed lecture by Dr. Pat Deegan about the voice hearing experience. Followed by the simulation\, during which participants will wear audio equipment\, with a specially designed recording that simulates the experience of hearing distressing voices\, while engaging in a variety of tasks\, designed to mimic real life experiences of individuals who hear voices. Upon completion the group will come back together for discussion. As a result of the simulation experience\, participants will increase their understanding of the lived experience\, increase empathy for those who struggle with it\, and gain insight into the impact their involvement/intervention can have on a person who hears distressing voices.\n\n\n\nHere's what people are saying about the simulation: \n\n"Thank you Pat for allowing me to get a better understanding of what a person goes through. I don't have sympathy\, I have empathy."\n\n \n\n"If you can put yourself in another's shoes even for a short time\, it really changes how you respond to and care for others."\n\n \n\n"This experience was transformative. It really challenged my preconceived notions and helped me better understand the experience of people who hear distressing voices everyday."
